Chassepot rifles worked wonders at Mentana

General Giuseppe Garibaldi was decisively defeated in 1867 during the Battle of Mentana by the Pope's troops and French reinforcements. This defeat was made possible by the use of new Chassepot rifles sent by Napoleon III. A French general celebrated this success with a dispatch proclaiming that the weapons had worked wonders.
