Giuseppe Garibaldi started as a privateer

In 1837, Giuseppe Garibaldi obtained a letter of marque from the government of Rio Grande do Sul to fight against the empire of Brazil. Aboard his ship named Mazzini, he challenged the imperial power by leading armed actions at sea. This first combat experience in South America preceded his land engagement alongside General Davi Canabarro.
