The blue whale mates with other species

The blue whale is a marine mammal that can produce viable hybrids with the fin whale and the humpback whale. This reproduction surprises biologists because the genetic distance between these two species is similar to that separating humans from gorillas. A study from the University of Toronto involving thirty-one North Atlantic blue whales has thus revealed that approximately 3.5% of their DNA comes from fin whales.
