An opera too difficult for its singers

Jean-Philippe Rameau is a composer whose innovative music sometimes baffled his contemporaries. He had to remove the second trio of the Fates from his opera Hippolyte et Aricie after the first performances. This musical boldness was abandoned because the performers could not manage to sing the score correctly.
