Roman pantomime was the musical comedy of the Empire

Pantomime is a total spectacle combining dance, music, singing and costumes that enjoyed immense popularity throughout the Roman Empire. It allowed all spectators to understand the plot, whether or not they spoke Latin, thanks to the use of deixis by the dancers. This theatrical entertainment thus fulfilled a major role in spreading Greco-Roman culture to all populations.
