The Salt Lake City Olympic Games were marred by corruption

Salt Lake City obtained the hosting of the 2002 Winter Olympic Games thanks to an elaborate corruption scheme. The organizers offered scholarships, land deals, and gifts to IOC members, such as two rifles worth 2,000 dollars given to Juan Antonio Samaranch. This affair led to the expulsion of 10 IOC members and the implementation of much stricter transparency rules.
