King Albert's first flight
King Albert performed his maiden flight in the company of Fernand Jacquet during a reconnaissance mission over the front line. The flight took place on 18 March 1917 with an escort of five Nieuports to ensure the sovereign's protection. This royal initiative led shortly after to the creation of the first fighter aircraft group of the Belgian army.
