The Pompeii of the East and its mysterious language

The Tambora culture is a vanished civilization whose existence was totally wiped off the map by the volcanic eruption of 1815. Excavations conducted in 2004 by Haraldur Sigurðsson made it possible to uncover dwellings and luxury trade objects under three meters of ash. The analysis of the rare preserved writings curiously shows that this people spoke a Papuan language originating from 500 kilometers further east.
