A subspecies of water rail has disappeared in Iceland

The Water Rail is a bird whose Icelandic population, R. a. hibernans, went extinct around 1965. This disappearance is due to the destruction of its habitat by the drainage of wetlands as well as the predation exerted by the American Mink. Before this total extinction, these birds took advantage of volcanic hot springs to survive all year round on the island.
