The water rail kills its prey by impaling them

The water rail is an omnivorous bird that hunts small vertebrates by breaking their spine with its beak. To do this, it impales or drowns its victims when their ability to flee is limited. This aggressive behavior allowed it to be observed killing a European greenfinch and a painted quail in an ornithological park.
