Water rail chicks are born entirely black

The water rail is a bird whose downy chicks are born entirely black, with the exception of their mainly white beak. This peculiarity is observed from the hatching of these medium-sized birds. Subsequently, after the breeding season, the adult undergoes a molt that deprives it of the ability to fly for about three weeks.
