Ottoman timekeepers and their clocks

The muwaqqit is an astronomer specializing in the measurement of time and prayer schedules. With the spread of mechanical clocks in the XVIII century, these specialists integrated these objects into their tools and became experts in manufacturing and repair. The inhabitants of the capital commonly came to set their personal watches in the lodges of these astronomers, the muvakkithanes.
