The first exoplanet atmosphere was discovered in 2001

The planet HD 209458 b possesses an atmosphere whose presence was evidenced for the first time in 2001. This discovery was made thanks to the detection of sodium during the passage of the star in front of its star. Observations conducted subsequently with the Hubble Space Telescope revealed an immense gas envelope reaching temperatures of 10 000 K.
