Ten meters of artificial soil lie beneath the place du Commerce

The subsoil of the historic center of Nantes shelters areas backfilled to shape defensive ditches or modify riverbeds. The place du Commerce thus rests on ten meters of displaced and compacted earth. These works were undertaken in the XIV century to allow for the development of the port quays.
