Nantes is the city that the American geographer Samuel Whittemore Boggs designated in 1945 as the pole of the continental hemisphere. This location is based on the planetary scale of the distribution of emerged lands. The municipality is also located at the bottom of the Loire estuary, 342 km southwest of Paris.
