The zortziko is originally a dance for conscripts

The zortziko is a popular dance from the Basque Country traditionally associated with a rhythm measured in dotted values. The musical meaning accepted by musicologists is however contested by Juan Antonio Urbeltz. The choreographer asserts that the name refers to sorchi, the conscript, making this dance the practice specific to young men of age to become soldiers.
