The first version of Caravaggio's painting was rejected

The painting of Saint Matthew and the Angel was refused in its first version. This altarpiece had to be entirely redone to replace an unsatisfactory statue in the Church of Saint Louis of the French in Rome. The complete set was finally installed definitively only in 1603 after these adventures.
