The intended competition between Caravaggio and Michelangelo
The association of the conversion of Paul and the crucifixion of Peter in the Cerasi Chapel is unusual for the period. A precedent exists however with the frescoes created by Michelangelo in the 1540s for the palatine chapel of Pope Paul III. The patron thus wished to place the young Caravaggio in direct competition with the old master of the Renaissance.
