Modern poker was born in 1829 with twenty cards

Modern poker took off in the United States at the beginning of the 19th century. A first account from 1829, written by the English actor Joseph Crowell, describes a game played in New Orleans with a deck restricted to twenty cards. This primitive version of the game then spread on steamboats sailing on the Mississippi before conquering the American West.
