Poker descends from a 15th century German game

The name of poker comes from the German pochen, a card pastime practiced as early as the 15th century. This ancient game featured rules and tactics very similar to those of current poker. In the 18th century, a French adaptation named poque emerged, although historical sources are lacking to attest to its actual practice outside of manuals.
