The red manna and the white manna of mayflies

An ecological trap is a degraded habitat that irresistibly attracts organisms to the point of putting their species in peril. This phenomenon has notably decimated populations of mayflies such as Heptagenia sulfurea. In the past, swarms of millions of these insects were so dense that they were called the red manna, or white manna for two other related species.
