Microsoft Word stored formatting separately for a long time

Until 2006, the Microsoft Word software separated raw data from its formatting using section breaks. This method inherited from the 1980s proved very cumbersome and caused document corruption. The system was finally abandoned in favor of Open XML for the 2007 edition.
