Software cannot be patented in Europe

In Europe, software patents are not authorized for a computer program as such. This rule finds its roots in 1973 during the European Patent Convention, which explicitly excludes computer programs from the scope of patentability. This provision was confirmed by the European Parliament in 2005 despite several attempts at modification.
