GT Interactive gave away the rights to the shareware version of Quake

The shareware version of Quake was left to id Software by the publisher GT Interactive during negotiations. The latter then judged that this distribution method belonged to the past and was only suitable for games in difficulty. Mike Wilson took advantage of this freedom to propose selling the shareware version on a CD-ROM containing the full game, which the buyer could unlock by paying.
