The ancestor of voting advice applications was a brochure for high school students

The StemWijzer is a voting aid system whose first version appeared in 1989 in the form of a brochure of 60 political statements. Designed by the ProDemos foundation of the Netherlands, this tool was originally intended for high school students to simplify party platforms. It was adapted to the internet in 1998, initially gathering only 6,500 users before reaching more than five million voters during the 2006 elections.
