Stendhal used more than one hundred pseudonyms

The writer Stendhal employed more than one hundred pen names to sign his works, his letters, or his intimate writings. This habit stemmed from both a desire to hide and a need to escape an identity imposed by society. His friend Prosper Mérimée indeed emphasized that he never sent mail without using a supposed name.
