A web company saved by free advertising

WebSideStory is a pioneering web analytics company founded in 1996 by Blaise Barrelet. It struggled to find paying customers for its SaaS service and decided to offer it for free in exchange for displaying an advertising banner on its users' sites. This trick allowed the structure to become profitable without raising funds before being acquired for 394 million dollars in 2008 by Omniture.
