Tea has been used in alcoholic cocktails since the 19th century, despite its use against alcoholism in England and Russia. Recipes for green or black tea-based punches have appeared since 1862 in The Bartender's Guide by Jerry Thomas, who is considered the founder of mixology. The Tea Punch notably requires heating a mixture of brandy, rum, sugar, lemon, and one liter of brewed green tea.
