The three-dimensional chess game visible in the Star Trek series consists of several superimposed boards where the pieces move. This idea is directly inspired by a real variant developed in 1907 by Ferdinand Maack. He himself had been influenced by the work of Lionel Kieseritzky on cubic chess.
