Magic is at the origin of the Coptic alphabet

The Coptic alphabet is a writing system derived mainly from uncial Greek that appeared at the end of the 1st century. It also integrates seven signs from Demotic in order to cover all the phonemes of the language. According to W. V. Davies, this precise adaptation met the fundamental need to faithfully transcribe the sounds of magical texts.
