Vulcanization was invented by accident

Charles Goodyear was trying to remove the elasticity of rubber when he inadvertently dropped a piece of sulfur-coated latex onto a hot stove. He first threw away the resulting mixture before realizing that he had just solved the problem he had been trying to fix for five years. He was thus able to patent this process which transformed the use of this material.
