Antoine-Rémy Polonceau invented road rolling in 1829

Road rolling is a method developed in 1829 by the French engineer Antoine-Rémy Polonceau. Before this invention, the stones for new roads were simply thrown onto the roadway and left for passing cars to pack them down naturally. This process destroyed a large quantity of materials through crushing before the road finally became compact.
