The side-reservoir oil lamp was invented by Joseph Louis Proust

The oil lamp traditionally suffered from a viscosity problem preventing the oil from rising correctly into the wick. To solve this difficulty, the French chemist Joseph Louis Proust designed around 1780 a model where the reservoir was placed high on the side. The oil was thus naturally pushed towards the burner by its own weight.
