Half of scleritis cases have no known cause

Scleritis is a serious inflammatory condition of the eye that often causes great pain and can lead to permanent vision loss. This pathology remains without an identifiable cause in half of the people affected by it. Approximately thirty to forty percent of patients also develop an underlying systemic autoimmune disease.
