The giant nuclear space probe abandoned in 2006

The Prometheus project is a space probe concept intended to explore the solar system using nuclear electric propulsion. It planned for a 200 kW nuclear reactor designed by the United States Navy and separated from the payload by a 43-meter section. The craft would have carried 12 tons of liquid xenon for a total mass of 38 tons before the program was stopped in 2006.
