Nuclear electric propulsion is used to explore Jupiter

Nuclear electric propulsion is a space technique combining a nuclear reactor and ion engines to produce high thrust. This method makes it possible to compensate for the insufficiency of sunlight beyond the orbit of Jupiter. The NASA Jupiter Icy Moons Orbiter project seriously considered its use in the early 2000s before being abandoned for financial reasons.
