Soviet tortoises orbited the Moon before humans

The unmanned Zond 5 mission sent tortoises around the Moon in September 1968. The onboard instruments and biological specimens allowed for testing space conditions to prepare for a manned flight. The animals survived the trip and space radiation without showing acute radiation syndrome, despite a 10 % weight loss.
