The Apollo mission engine derives from a ballistic missile

The SPS engine of the Apollo spacecraft is the central thruster that allowed for lunar orbit insertion and the return to Earth. It derives directly from the rocket engine that powered an upper stage of the Titan intercontinental ballistic missile. This engine with 9.1 tons of thrust could be restarted up to fifty times to accomplish all of its missions.
