Nine animal taxa were studied between 2006 and 2009 around Chernobyl to measure the impact of radioactivity on their abundance. Birds and mammals recorded the sharpest declines in the contaminated areas of Belarus. A difference of a factor of 18 was thus observed between the most resistant and the most vulnerable animal groups.
