The muwaqqit is the dynasty of prayer time calculators

The muwaqqit is an astronomer in charge of determining the times for ritual prayers. The origin of this function remains poorly known, but the oldest historical document proves its existence in the 13th century in the Mamluk Sultanate. Abu al-Hasan ali ibn Abd al-Malik ibn Sim'un was the first known holder, exercising his duty at the Amr ibn al-As mosque in Fostat in Egypt, before his son and his grandson succeeded him.
