The first Masonic lodge in Latin America prepared for emancipation

El Arcano Sublime de la Filantropía is a Masonic lodge considered the first one created in Latin America. This circle founded by Antonio Nariño had the objective of working on the emancipation of the colony through secret meetings. Participants studied smuggled European books and newspapers there, including Nariño's 1793 translation of the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen.
