A polar survival at the expense of dogs
Fridtjof Nansen and his companion Johansen had to sacrifice their sled dogs to survive during their trek on the ice. They began slaughtering the weakest subjects on April 24 in order to feed the rest of the pack. On August 6, they finally killed the very last specimens before taking to the sea on their assembled kayaks.
