The first Europeans were mistaken for sea spirits

The Kali’na described the first Europeans they met as sea spirits, naming them Palanakiłi. This initial term continues to be used today to refer to white people. During these first contacts with these Spanish traders, the tribe discovered iron tools that were much more efficient than their own stone axes.
