A mandatory formula begins a Kabyle tale

The Kabyle tale is a major component of the traditional oral literature of the region. Each story opens invariably with the introductory formula Machaho ! Tellem Chao !. These stories often feature popular figures like Mohand the jackal or Djeha, a cunning character from the North African imagination.
