A hellish journey in 18th century Italy

The traveler Smollett crossed Italy in appalling conditions marked by filth, vermin and execrable food. In Foligno, he notably had to share his room with a poor English heretic whom he described as a wild beast. His wife cried from exhaustion throughout the journey and Smollett even accused the bedbugs of having caused her whooping cough.
