The ruins of Volubilis are called the Pharaoh's Palace

The archaeological site of Volubilis bears a completely different name locally. The French historian Charles-Joseph Tissot discovered that Arabic sources referred to these remains by the name Qasr Fara'on. This term, meaning Pharaoh's Palace, is still used today by the inhabitants of the region, sometimes in the abbreviated form of El Ksar.
