The Canada goose is a migratory or sedentary bird whose average mass is between 3.3 and 4.1 kilograms. However, the construction standard for jet engines only requires resistance to the impact of an animal of 1.8 kilograms maximum. The NTSB thus concluded that the size of the ingested specimens far exceeded the official certification criteria.
