Uranus was discovered by an amateur astronomer

Uranus is a planet of the solar system discovered by the musician and amateur astronomer William Herschel. Lacking the means to buy a telescope, he polished his mirror himself to observe the sky from the garden of his house in Bath on March 13, 1781. Thinking at first that he was dealing with a comet because of the movement of the star, he eventually alerted the Royal Society on April 26, 1781.
