Shunga are erotic Japanese ukiyo-e style prints whose golden age occurred during the Edo period. Although these graphic works were considered clandestine, they benefited from remarkable tolerance on the part of the authorities. This institutional complacency resulted in a single official seizure of these libertine productions, which occurred in 1841.
