The Raft of the Medusa inspired an American masterpiece

The Gulf Stream is a painting created in 1899 by the American painter Winslow Homer. This work adopts the composition of The Raft of the Medusa by placing a black man at the center of a damaged vessel surrounded by sharks. A ship visible in the distance also echoes the brig Argus painted in miniature by Géricault.
